Aase Haugen was a young woman who immigrated from Eggedal, Norway, in 1854 at age 13. She cared for her entire family through their final days and ended up alone, with no family at age 42. She became a philanthropist with her large estate until her death in 1910 at age 69. Her last will and testament gave everything she owned to the Norwegian Lutheran Church to, “build a home for the aged in her name so that no one would ever die alone.” The first Aase Haugen Home was completed in 1915 and has relocated and grown in response to community need ever since.
