Long-Term Care Insurance Claims Checklist
Long-term care insurance can cover a large share of assisted living or memory care costs, but claims stall when families wait until move-in week to open the policy.
Pull the contract early. Note the waiting period, daily or monthly benefit cap, inflation rider, and the ADL or cognitive triggers that start benefits. Ask the insurer which assessments they accept and whether the community must be licensed or certified in a specific way.
Before you tour, estimate the gap between the community's all-in monthly rate and the policy benefit. Some policies reimburse after you pay; others pay the provider directly. Document care needs with physician notes, medication lists, and a short timeline of why home care is no longer safe.
FindRetireHome advisors can help you map policy benefits to communities with published pricing and inspection context, at no cost to the family.
