Florida ALF License Types Explained (Standard, ECC, LNS, LMH)

Florida regulates assisted living facilities (ALFs) through the Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). Every ALF needs a Standard license. Specialty licenses expand what care a facility may provide.

Extended Congregate Care (ECC) allows a higher level of support so some residents can age in place longer than a standard ALF would allow. Limited Nursing Services (LNS) authorizes certain nursing services beyond the standard license. Limited Mental Health (LMH) is required when the community serves one or more statutory mental health residents. In 2026, Chapter 2026-102 (CS/CS/SB 1404) added a Memory Care Services specialty license for ALFs that serve memory care residents or market memory care. AHCA must adopt the implementing rules by June 1, 2027. Until those rules take effect, treat "memory care" as a program claim you still have to verify on tour, not as proof of a separate license already on the wall. Admission and retention rules matter as much as the license name. Florida law limits how long a bedridden resident may stay unless the facility holds the right specialty authority and the care still fits the ALF model. Ask every community which licenses it holds and what would trigger a transfer to skilled nursing.

Memory care in Florida is typically delivered inside an ALF with secured programming and dementia-trained staff, not as a separate federal license category like nursing homes. Always confirm how the community manages wandering risk, staffing at night, and progressive dementia needs.
