Florida State Veterans Homes vs Community Senior Living

Florida operates State Veterans' Homes through the Florida Department of Veterans' Affairs. Families often type that name into a search bar after a hospital stay and assume it is a free assisted living apartment. It is not.

What the state homes actually are

They are mainly skilled nursing campuses for eligible veterans, with some space-available rules for spouses. Locations include homes in markets such as Daytona Beach, Pembroke Pines, Port Charlotte, and others. A domiciliary (assisted-style) option exists in Lake City. Bed counts, memory-care wings, and waitlists change. Confirm current sites and eligibility on floridavets.org, not a brochure from last year.

This is a different product from a community ALF. Admission is not the same as touring a Boca Raton campus and writing a deposit check.

What to do while you wait

If the person needs help now with bathing and medications but not 24-hour skilled nursing, start on Florida assisted living hubs. VA Aid & Attendance can offset a community month for eligible wartime veterans and some surviving spouses. Use the VA tool on FindRetireHome, browse veteran-friendly listings, and take the free care assessment so an advisor can run both tracks at no cost.

If skilled nursing is the medical need, compare CMS-rated nursing homes on the Florida nursing home hub alongside any state-home application.

Common questions

Is a Florida State Veterans Home the same as assisted living?
No. FDVA State Veterans' Homes are primarily skilled nursing (and one domiciliary setting), with eligibility rules and waitlists. Community assisted living is a licensed ALF that families often fund with private pay plus VA Aid & Attendance.
Can we apply for a State Veterans Home and still tour community ALFs?
Yes. Waitlists move slowly. Keep a community shortlist and start Aid & Attendance paperwork so you are not stuck in a hospital hallway if the state home has no bed.
