What to ask before you treat the base rate as the bill
Ask how often staff check and change, including overnight. Ask whether briefs and wipes are included or billed per item. Ask what the next care tier costs if accidents become daily. A starting price on a city hub is a floor. Incontinence is one of the add-ons that quietly doubles a "good deal."
On the tour, ask who notices a closed door and a missed meal. Isolation plus incontinence is a skin and infection risk, not only a laundry problem. When the license, not the laundry, is the limit
AHCA Form 1823 should describe toileting. If the exam already shows wounds, a two-person transfer, or 24-hour nursing, start on the nursing home hub or read our two-person transfer guide. Florida ALFs generally cannot keep stage 3 or 4 pressure sores. A stage 2 sore has extra nursing and documentation rules and a 30-day improvement clock.

- Yes, toileting and continence help are ordinary activities of daily living in a licensed ALF. The gap is how much help, how often, and whether supplies are in the base rate. Ask whether staff cue, escort, or provide total care, including overnight changes.
- Is incontinence care included in the monthly assisted living rate?
- Often not fully. Many communities put frequent incontinence on a higher care tier and bill briefs, wipes, or barrier cream separately. Ask for a written all-in quote that includes supplies and night changes, not only the advertised starting rent.
- When does incontinence mean memory care or a nursing home?
- When the person cannot find the bathroom, resists care, or already has skin breakdown that needs skilled wound care. Stage 3 or 4 pressure injuries generally cannot stay in a Florida ALF. Standard incontinence with a willing resident can still fit assisted living.
