Moving

The Senior Move Checklist

Moving into senior living is as much an emotional transition as a logistical one, and giving yourself more runway than feels necessary almost always pays off.

Start eight to twelve weeks out if possible: confirm the move-in date, request the community's furniture and space dimensions, and begin sorting belongings into keep, donate, and family-heirloom piles. Most communities offer significantly smaller living spaces than a family home, so this step usually takes longer than people expect.

Four to six weeks out, arrange movers (ask if the community has a preferred, senior-move-experienced mover), submit change-of-address paperwork, and transfer or set up utilities and mail forwarding. This is also the time to gather medical records, medication lists, insurance cards, and legal documents (power of attorney, advance directives) into one folder the new care team can reference immediately.

In the final two weeks, do a final walkthrough of the new space to confirm furniture placement, label boxes clearly by room, and pack a first-night bag with medications, a phone charger, and a few familiar or sentimental items so the first night doesn't feel entirely unfamiliar.

After move-in, expect an adjustment period of several weeks — it's normal for a new resident to seem quieter or more withdrawn at first. Regular visits, bringing familiar photos or decor for the room, and getting them plugged into one activity early on all tend to ease the transition faster than trying to "do everything" on day one.
