After AAA Repair or EVAR: Assisted Living in Florida
An abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, including EVAR, sends families searching assisted living after EVAR Florida while the groin dressing is still taped. This is not the carotid-stent page, not the endarterectomy page, and not a heart-stent page. Endovascular aneurysm repair places a stent graft from the groin. Open AAA repair uses a belly or flank incision. Vascular pathways still send many EVAR patients home in a day or two when family is in the house. The placement question is who will look at the groin, hold a lifting limit, and get the person to the follow-up scan. This page is not medical advice. Confirm activity limits and blood-pressure orders with the vascular surgeon.
Groin sites and lifting limits are the admission questions
Hospital teams watch the groins, kidney function, blood pressure, and whether the person can walk without using a belly incision to sit up. Discharge planners start with home after straightforward EVAR. They start with a short skilled stay after open repair, after a complication, or when transfers still take two trained people. Those last tasks are skilled. Medicare may cover a qualifying short skilled stay after an inpatient admission. That clock is nursing. It is not an assisted living lease.
EVAR avoids the large open incision, which is why older and frailer people are offered it. That does not make the apartment automatic. A groin hematoma, a fever, a new cold foot, or a person who will not keep the lifting limit is a hospital call. Open AAA repair is closer to the open-heart page: sternal precautions become abdominal precautions. Do not pull the person up by the arms or let them brace on a belly wound.
If the note says TCAR or carotid endarterectomy, stop and read those pages. If the stent was in a coronary artery, or a sternum was opened, use the heart-stent or CABG page. Endoleak surveillance is a later CT, often in months, not a reason to skip the first-week license check.
A person who already lives in an ALF and just left the hospital is a return-to-community question. Ask the administrator, in writing, whether the groin or belly check, the lifting limit, and the blood-pressure targets still fit the license. Rule 59A-36.006 still blocks admission when 24-hour nursing is required.
The tour is the groin, the lift rule, and who notices a cold foot
Ask who looks at each groin or the belly incision, including at night. Ask who cues the no-heavy-lifting rule when the person reaches for a walker or a dining chair. Ask who notices a new cold foot, a sudden back or belly pain, or a pressure that is far off the written target. Ask whether staff will hold a blood-pressure tablet only when a clinician ordered a hold. Unlicensed staff may bring a scheduled tablet. They generally may not decide the pulse "looks fine" and skip it.
AHCA Form 1823 should name EVAR or open AAA repair, the access sites, the lifting limit, and the blood-pressure plan. Extended Congregate Care or Limited Nursing Services can be the difference after a weekend groin change. They are still not a vascular floor.
Shortlist two vascular-aware ALFs, plus a skilled backup
Open the nearest city hub and the nursing home hub. Compare two communities that already keep heart or vascular residents and one skilled option if an open incision, a bleeding groin, or unfinished therapy is still the driver. Read medication findings. Then take the free care assessment or open Get Help so a licensed advisor can call communities that can admit the current picture, at no cost to the family.
Common questions
- Can a parent go to assisted living after EVAR or open AAA repair?
- Sometimes after EVAR, once the groin sites, blood pressure, and walking match what a Florida ALF will staff. EVAR is an endovascular stent graft through the groin. Open AAA repair is a larger belly or flank incision and usually needs a short skilled stay first. A bleeding groin, an open abdomen still healing, or unfinished skilled nursing still belongs in the hospital or rehab.
- How is this different from the TCAR page, the CEA page, or the heart-stent page?
- TCAR and CEA are neck operations on the carotid artery. The heart-stent page is a coronary stent or an ICD. Open-heart surgery is a sternum. This page is the abdominal aorta: an aneurysm repaired from the groin with EVAR, or opened with an abdominal incision. Read those pages if the neck, the heart, or the chest bone is the operation on the note.
- Does Medicare pay for assisted living after AAA repair or EVAR?
- No. Medicare may cover the repair, a qualifying short skilled stay, and some home-health visits after an inpatient admission. It does not pay ongoing assisted living room and board. Endoleak follow-up imaging is a clinic calendar item, not an ALF benefit.
