After SAVR or Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement: Assisted Living in Florida
An open surgical aortic valve replacement, often written as SAVR, sends families searching assisted living after SAVR Florida while the sternum is still wired. This is not the TAVR page and not a generic CABG page. TAVR places a valve through a blood vessel. SAVR opens the chest. Frail older adults leave for a skilled bed more often after SAVR than after an uncomplicated TAVR. The first decision is whether nights still need skilled wound and sternal-precaution help, or a licensed ALF can keep the person from pushing up with both arms. This page is not medical advice. Confirm sternal and anticoagulant orders with the surgeon.
Treat the sternum as the admission question, not the lobby piano
Hospital teams watch the incision, heart rhythm, kidneys, and a new valve-medication list. Discharge planners start with a short skilled stay or home health when the person still cannot stand without loading the chest, still has a wet incision, or still has swinging fluid. Those tasks are skilled. National discharge data have put about one in five SAVR patients in a skilled nursing facility, and frailty cuts the share who go straight home. That is a placement signal, not a campus brochure.
Medicare may cover a qualifying short skilled stay after an inpatient admission. That clock is rehab and nursing. It is not an assisted living lease. When the person can transfer without using the chest for leverage, swallow the current pills, and nights at home still look unsafe, a licensed ALF can be the landing place. Cueing "do not push up with both arms" is ordinary personal care once the community agrees in writing. Daily skilled wound packing or unstable fluid overload is not.
If the note says TAVR, stop and read that page. If the same operation included bypass grafts, read the open-heart CABG page the same day. A mechanical valve usually means a long-term blood thinner. A tissue valve may not. Ask who gives that tablet on the written clock. Our blood-thinner guide belongs on the same list if warfarin or a DOAC was added.
A person who already lives in an ALF and just left the hospital is a return-to-community question. Ask the administrator, in writing, whether sternal precautions, the anticoagulant, and any new pacemaker still fit the license. Rule 59A-36.006 still blocks admission when 24-hour nursing or unfinished skilled rehab is required.
The tour is who stops a two-arm push, and who notices a fever on the incision
Ask who helps the person stand from a chair without pulling on the chest. Ask who notices new drainage or a click that was not there yesterday. Ask who gives the evening heart pills if dinner is late. Ask whether staff will hold a blood thinner only when a clinician ordered a hold. Unlicensed staff may bring a scheduled tablet. They generally may not decide the incision "looks fine" and skip it.
AHCA Form 1823 should name SAVR or surgical aortic valve replacement, the valve type if the surgeon wrote it, the sternal limits, and today's transfer help. Extended Congregate Care or Limited Nursing Services can be the difference after a weekend flare. They are still not a cardiac floor.
Shortlist two sternal-precaution ALFs, plus a skilled backup
Open the nearest city hub and the nursing home hub. Compare two communities that already keep post-open-heart residents and one skilled option if therapy or an unstable incision is still the driver. Read medication and weight-monitoring findings. Then take the free care assessment or open Get Help so a licensed advisor can call communities that can admit the current picture, at no cost to the family.
Common questions
- Can a parent go to assisted living after SAVR or an open aortic valve replacement?
- Usually after a short skilled stay or home-health week, not the day the sternum is closed. SAVR is an open chest operation. TAVR is the groin-or-chest catheter valve. A Florida ALF can be the later address when sternal precautions, the blood-thinner plan, and nights at home still look unsafe, and daily skilled nursing is no longer the driver.
- How is this different from the TAVR page or the CABG page?
- The TAVR page is a transcatheter aortic valve, usually through the groin, with a shorter hospital stay. The CABG page is bypass grafts. This page is the open surgical aortic valve: sternotomy, sternal precautions, and a mechanical or tissue valve. Read both neighbors if the same week included bypass grafts or a later TAVR discussion.
- Does Medicare pay for assisted living after SAVR?
- No. Medicare may cover the surgery, a qualifying short skilled stay, and some home-health or cardiac-rehab visits after an inpatient admission. It does not pay ongoing assisted living room and board. Start the ALF shortlist before the Notice of Medicare Non-Coverage.
