Memory Care vs Nursing Home in Florida
Memory care and a nursing home can both serve someone with dementia. They are not the same license, the same staffing model, or the same payer story.
When memory care is the better fit
Choose a secured memory care neighborhood when wandering, sundowning, or severe confusion is the main risk, and the person is otherwise medically stable. In Florida that program usually sits inside a licensed ALF. Ask about night staffing, door alarms, and how the community plans to obtain the Memory Care Services license after AHCA finishes 2026 rules.
When a nursing home is the better fit
Choose skilled nursing for wounds, unstable medical conditions, complex swallowing or IV needs, or a short rehab stay after a hospital admission. Some Florida nursing homes run their own secured dementia units. That can be the right combination when dementia and skilled nursing both apply.
How families actually pay
Medicare may cover a qualifying short-term skilled stay. It does not pay ongoing memory care. Florida Medicaid is more often the long-term payer in a nursing home than for ALF room and board. Waiver help in memory care, when it exists, still leaves a room-and-board share and can sit on a waitlist.

Common questions
- Is memory care the same as a nursing home in Florida?
- No. Memory care is usually a secured program inside a licensed ALF for dementia that is still medically stable. A nursing home is 24-hour skilled nursing, often with CMS star ratings. Some nursing homes also have secured dementia units.
- Does Florida Medicaid pay for memory care the same way it pays for a nursing home?
- Usually no. Nursing home coverage often runs through the Institutional Care Program once someone qualifies. Memory care inside an ALF, when Medicaid helps at all, follows SMMC LTC rules, waitlists, and a room-and-board share. Confirm the current path with DCF and your ADRC.
