Wound VAC and Drainage Tubes in Florida Assisted Living
Hospital teams say "wound vac" or "JP drain" and families search assisted living the same afternoon. In Florida, negative-pressure wound therapy and post-surgical drainage-tube management are license stops, not apartment preferences. This page is not medical or legal advice. What the rules generally do not allow
Residents admitted to a standard, Limited Nursing Services, or Limited Mental Health ALF generally may not require management of post-surgical drainage tubes and wound vacuum devices. Extended Congregate Care uses the same bar in Rule 59A-36.021. A pretty dining room does not change that list. Ask the discharge planner to write the device name on Form 1823. If it says wound VAC, NPWT, or an active drain, do not tour communities that already said no.
A different door exists for a surgical incision that has been stabilized, with a plan of care in the record. That is a dressing and a follow-up appointment, not a vacuum pump. Stage 3 or 4 pressure injuries are a separate, generally blocked picture. Do not mix those three sentences in the same tour question.

Use the skilled stay, then shortlist the ALF
Medicare may cover a qualifying short skilled stay and some related supplies. It does not convert into an ALF month. When the vac comes off and the incision is stable, open the Florida assisted living hub, read deficiencies pages for wound and infection findings, and take the free care assessment so a licensed advisor can confirm the license match, at no cost to the family.
If the surgeon says the vac stays, start on the Florida nursing home hub. That is the honest next address, not a cheaper ALF that will have to discharge you in a week.

- Can someone with a wound VAC live in a Florida ALF?
- Generally no while the vacuum device is still required. Rule 59A-36.006 and Rule 59A-36.021 generally bar management of post-surgical drainage tubes and wound vacuum devices in standard, Limited Nursing Services, Limited Mental Health, and Extended Congregate Care settings. Start on the nursing home hub until the surgeon says the vac is gone.
- Can a Florida ALF take a resident with a surgical incision or a drain?
- A stabilized surgical incision with a written plan of care can sometimes stay. An active wound VAC or a drain that still needs management generally cannot. Confirm the current rule and the 1823 wording with the administrator before you treat an empty room as a yes.
- Does Medicare pay for assisted living if a wound VAC is the reason we cannot go home?
- No. Medicare may cover a qualifying short skilled stay and some wound supplies. It does not pay ongoing assisted living room and board. Keep the person in rehab or a nursing home until the device is discontinued, then shortlist ALFs.
