PICC Lines and IV Antibiotics in Florida Assisted Living
Hospitals send people home with a PICC and a week of IV antibiotics, then tell the family to find assisted living by Friday. In Florida, intravenous therapy is a specialty-license question, not a "the nurse can pop by" question. This page is not medical or legal advice. Which license can even say yes
Standard and Limited Mental Health ALFs are generally restricted from offering IV therapy in the facility. Extended Congregate Care and Limited Nursing Services licenses are the usual doors when staff will hang antibiotics, flush a PICC, or watch an infusion. The service still has to appear on AHCA Form 1823. A hallway promise from marketing is not a nurse on Saturday.
Home health can support some residents, but only if the administrator will keep the person and the license still fits. Do not let the hospital treat a home-health referral as proof the ALF can admit. Ask who accesses the PICC, how often the dressing is changed, and what happens if the line clots at 9 p.m.
A short IV antibiotic course is different from long-term parenteral nutrition or a line the person cannot protect. If the person also needs a feeding tube or suctioning, read those guides the same day. Stacked skilled tasks usually belong in a nursing home first.
Finish rehab math before you sign a lease

Common questions
- Can a Florida ALF give IV antibiotics through a PICC line?
- Usually not in a standard or Limited Mental Health license. Extended Congregate Care or Limited Nursing Services communities may provide IV therapy when it is on AHCA Form 1823 and licensed staff (or a contracted nurse) will run it. Confirm the license on the wall and who flushes the line on weekends.
- Can home health come into a Florida ALF to run a PICC?
- Sometimes, when the administrator agrees and the license still allows the resident to stay. Home health is not a workaround for a standard ALF that cannot keep someone who needs IV therapy. Ask both the agency and the administrator, in writing, before the hospital books a discharge van.
- Does Medicare pay for assisted living during a PICC or IV antibiotic course?
- No. Medicare may cover a qualifying short skilled stay and some infusion-related services. It does not pay ongoing assisted living room and board. If daily IV care is the driver, start on the nursing home hub unless an LNS or ECC community has already said yes.
